The Death of Civility

Maybe it’s just me, but I see a strange synchronicity between Representative Joe Wilson, Kanye and the town hall protestors. Each, to me, is a clear illustration of how we’ve come off the rails in this country in respect for one another.

At one time such behavior was limited to the athletic field of play, and even then only in certain sports, such as professional tennis and soccer, but no one, in real life would think of behaving in such a way. So, where was the tipping point where such behavior became mainstream or even encouraged, such as in the case of Joe Wilson? If I had to say, I would say the 2000 presidential election, where eager news cameras documented boorish behavior by local (and many not so local) citizens protesting even the attempt to recount ballots in the Florida election. And since this bad behavior continues to be rewarded (Joe Wilson has raised over a million dollars since his outburst, the town hall protestors have slowed healthcare reform, in spite of poll numbers suggesting otherwise, and I’m sure viewership of Jay Leno’s show tonight will be much higher than if Kayne had kept the peace), we will see more of such behavior.

See these guerrilla tactics have proven effective to the chagrin of public relations workers everywhere. But while such behavior does affect product sales and sponsorship (i.e. Glenn Beck) the Karl Roves of the world have realized that it is a very effective means to solidify one’s base and obtain press coverage to one’s cause. The AM talk show world (Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, etc…) realized too, that it is more profitable to loyal sliver of the population, than lukewarm masses. The sponsors that remain with these provocateurs will pay top dollar for access to such a focused and rabid group.

And speaking of the masses, it seems that the latter day equivalent to the Roman edict of “Bread (fast cheap food) and Circus’ (Reality TV, sports, etc)” suffices enough to keep us disengaged and amused by the death of civility. But rest assured that this lack of attention will cost us dearly, if we don’t stand up to it now. Not just for sake of those who agree with our political and social position, but for all our sakes, we must regain what we have lost, so that processes we hold dear (honest and fair elections, equal treatment, care for those in need) may survive as well. For many of these processes are the very reasons for maintaining a society.

Signs and Wonders

Waiting on a moment,

Can take an eternity.

All around us, all within us,

signs and wonders bind us.

Charting one’s stars,

Offers little earthly guidence.

All around us, all within us,

signs and wonders sing to us.

Why search for a heaven,

which is already here?

All around us, all within us,

signs and wonders dance with us.

We don’t Trust God

As children we were taught to place our trust in God. But it seems obvious that we do not trust God.

If we trusted God, we would not judge others.

If we trusted God, we would not fear death.

If we trusted God, we would not be jealous of others.

If we trusted God, we would not seek revenge.

If we trusted God, we would accept his call on our lives.

If we trusted God, we would accept all His creations for the masterpieces that they are.

If we trusted God, we would reflect His love without condition.

And yet His grace is sufficient.

My Prayer

My God, I am humbled by thy faithfulness unto me.

To the One who was, is and is to come, bless me with thy Holy Spirit, that I might have thy peace and let go of all these earthly things. Let my thoughts be your thoughts, that I might serve thy purpose. May my life be a prayer unto thee and a blessing unto your creation.

Pookie’em

Through joy and woe, your soul she knows. does not matter where your life may go, through your veins she flows.
She hustles to get paid, but she’ ain’t for sale, still you think she’s for play, but she’ll never tell.
Pookie never hesitates, Pookie never deviates, Pookie never carries hate, Pookie is imaginative.

Pookie might clown you, when you’re not around. But push come to shove, Pookie is always down.
Pookie got game you’ve never seen, her skin is almond cream, her love, is like mad steam, her life is nothing like it seems.
Pookie never hesitates, Pookie never deviates, Pookie never carries hate, Pookie is sometimes….. late.

She ain’t done half the stuff folks claim, but she’s been a quiet witness through tinted panes, to streets flowing in pain, and lyrics rich in crimson stain.
She chases light, but runs in the shadows. She holds her Bible tight, but quick to spit a wicked flow.
Pookie never hesitates, Pookie never deviates, Pookie never carries hate, Pookie is always great, even if, you can’t relate.

Pookie drops verses like mad men drop curses. She doesn’t choose the words, they choose her.
And in case you hadn’t heard, she thinks all your thoughts are absurd, Doesn’t say these things to disturb, she just reports, what she observes.
Pookie never hesitates, Pookie never deviates, Pookie never carries hate, Pookie embraces fate.

The Empty Circle

Something tearing at your side,

so everything ignores your pride,

and you go dancing around and about,

fearing you’ll find no way out,

just when you think the fear is gone,

you look down and realize what you done.

Why it matters

If I could somehow share the knowing deep inside of me, that you might see, even for a moment, the true weight of things, not a word would I need to share. But since I cannot, I must ask that you take a minute to consider these things.

While I am not foolish enough to place total faith in any man or woman, I have all the faith in the world in the message within me. The one passed down through the ages, across races, social economic statuses and across the waters. For I have a hope inside of me that transcends every barrier, even life. So while I am not attesting to the effectiveness of one party’s policies versus the next, I can testify that policies of division ring hollow against the policies of inclusiveness and unity. In the past both parties have spent time on the wrong side of this thing we call social evolution, this flattening of the old paradigm of privileges of birth, into a new one of equal opportunities regardless of one’s station when born.

However, reactionary forces both at home and abroad, would have us believe that salvation lies in reclaiming old ways, but even a cursory review of history exposes the fallacy in such thinking. From tribes, to monarchies, to oligarchies, to republics, to democracies to something we have never seen before, society has and will evolve. And those societies that did not evolve no longer exist. Much like we as a species have survived and moved to the top of the food chain through evolution and adaptation, so too must we as a people. We must trust in the ageless underlying principals regarding the equality of peoples, even above the dictates of any text trapped in time. Any document, be it the Bible, the Constitution or whatever, at best serve as the beginning, not the conclusion of understanding.

And if these thoughts do not move you to action, please consider that in this society today, you often have not, because you ask not. Our elected officials are very aware of which communities turn out to vote and those which do not. Active, engaged citizenry are central to their quest to remained employed and the retention of the benefits therein. Communities that don’t vote, don’t count as much, literally. So, before you curse the name of politicians everywhere, please ask yourself what would you do, if you had two jobs and one paid twice as much as the other. How much attention would pay to the lessor paying job?

Lastly, for those who best respond to anger and/or fear, have you ever considered what pollsters mean by the term “likely voters”? Well, in plain English, it means that when they approximate the likely out come of an election, they discount the contribution of minorities, poor people and young voters. Pollsters do this because historical data strongly suggests that you won’t bother to go vote. So, if it doesn’t bother you that they count you as 1/2 or 2/3 of a person, then by all means, please stay home and don’t vote. If you avoid going to the ballot box often enough, maybe someday you won’t have to worry about people like me bugging you to exercise your right to vote.

Peace,

Alan Jones
